Viewed 724 times. In the past, older Mac Pro machines have not been supported by newer macOS releases due to standard features on the machine (e.g. Bluetooth wasn't standard on 2008s, limiting Sierra) or by CPU extensions (SSE 4.2 required for Mojave). With the announcement of Big Sur, Apple states that you must have a 2013 'trash can' Mac. If Big Sur is a no-go for non-Metal macs, linux kernel 4.19 LTS would be the next best option from 2022 (projected end of catalina support) to 2024 (projected end of 4.19 LTS support). Edit: All kernels 5.x have wake from suspend issues with the mid 2009 macbook pro.

- Dosdude1 big sur. Dosdude1 big sur.
- Note: 2010 15'/17' MacBook Pros, 2010 iMacs currently cannot boot Big Sur since they crash while loading a specific kext. 2009 At this point, it gets really confusing, and I don't have a definitive answer to whether they do or don't work.
- The signs are quite good that Big Sur will also install on somewhat older Macs that Apple has refused to support officially. The way to do this is, as usual, a patch. Currently, the beta version of Big Sur macOS 11 can be installed on machines that are several years older than officially supported by Apple.
OnyX is a multifunction utility that you can use to verify the structure of the system files, to run miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning tasks, to configure parameters in the Finder, Dock, Safari, and some Apple applications, to delete caches, to remove certain problematic folders and files, to rebuild various databases and indexes, and more.
OnyX is a reliable application which provides a clean interface to many tasks that would otherwise require complex commands to be typed using a command-line interface.
WARNING:
There is a specific version of OnyX for each major version of the operating system.
Use the correct version, and don't try to use a version intended for an earlier operating system.
